Mary Kardash Child Care Inc.

Mary Kardash Child Care Inc. began operation in September of 1991. The idea of

having a Centre came from parents in the Luxton School area who saw a need.

Originally the centre was called St. Cross Child Care Centre after the street near the

school. In October of 1995 we were proud to re-name the centre after Mary Kardash

who was an advocate for the needs of children and who also lived in the North End of

the city.

For the first two years of operation the Centre was located in the Luxton Community

Centre, however in 1993 Luxton School provided us with space to house the school age program and the pre-school program relocated to Main and Cathedral. In the summer of 1998 Luxton School again agreed to give us two rooms for the pre-school program and the centre moved in under one roof. Mary Kardash Child Care Centre Inc. now has 37 pre-school spaces and 40 school age spaces.

The Government of Manitoba licenses our organization. Provincial day care coordinators regularly visit the centre to inspect the program and offer recommendations for change and improvement. Both Fire Inspectors and Public Health Inspectors also visit to make sure the centre is safe and hazard free. All planning and program implementation is centered around the well being of the children.

The centre is a "non-profit" organization. Money to run the centre comes from fees

charged to parents, government subsidy and grants, and whatever fundraising is done.

Mary Kardash Child Care Inc. believes that the success of our program lies in the

quality and excellence of its staff. The staff in our centre are committed to the

community and families that we serve. Understanding that our centre provides care to

children with a wide range of needs it is necessary that we stay on the "cutting edge" of information that relates to our field. Upgrading our skills and ongoing professional

development is our commitment.

Each staff, employed in our centre, has been chosen because they matched with our

centre's phylosophy and goals. The staff come with a variety of educational

backgrounds and experiences. All staff must be certified in both first aid and CPR.
